Writing to ‘get it right the first time’ is like driving a car with the emergency brake on. In order to write more good stuff faster, and
suffer less, you need to focus on removing the stalling, obsessing, and nitpicking from your composing process, and to think about a
different kind of process.
A few tracks into the latest effort, Of The Blue Colour Of The Sky” by Chicago based power pop quartet OK Go and I was reminded the line “I bet they won’t be expecting that” from the first song on their last album, “Oh No”. This is album is right out of left field, but not in a bad way, mind you. The first track “WTF?” is a wonderful fast paced dance-pop tune, as chaotic as it is fun. As the album progresses it calms down, but never feels like the band is trying to be something they are not. While it may be a departure from their previous body of work, it keeps enough of what they were to feel like they are still the same band.
